What does the podiatrist-pedicure do?

In Switzerland, the podiatrist is recognized by the law on the health professions and empowered to practice with the authorization of the cantonal doctor.

 

The podiatrist is the foot, balance and walking specialist.

It is competent to treat conditions of the skin and toenails.
By making plantar supports, he seeks the appropriate solutions to revive a good function of the lower limb, the most harmonious and painless walk possible and even better insurance in the balance of posture.

The podiatrist works on any type of foot and in particular on so-called "at risk" feet in people with immune defense disorders, arterial insufficiency, neuropathies, frequent decrease in sensitivity in diabetic patients, or by example in oncological treatment, hand-foot syndrome.

It is necessary to know that now a pedicure is indicated for a beauty of the feet or an aesthetic pedicure.
He is in no case entitled to provide medical care.

The podiatrist or pedicure are health professionals authorized to provide preventive, curative and palliative care at the feet of people of all ages.

They prevent, detect and treat certain conditions of the skin, toes and nails. They make orthopedic insoles in order to rebalance walking and running.

They treat nail anomalies as well as deformities of the toes and the foot. They also take part in various preventive actions through counseling and education.

Their main activities are:

 

Treat

  • treating keratoses (corns, calluses, horny skin ...)

  • treat skin problems, such as plantar warts, yeast infections, blisters ...;

  • screen for possible foot conditions;

  • treat ingrown toenails;

  • correct deformation of the curvature of the nails;

  • perform massages;

 

Make equipment

  • custom-made from a podiatric assessment of orthopedic insoles;

  • custom-made orthotics protecting or correcting the toes (orthoplasty);

  • custom-made devices correcting the curvature of the nails (orthonyxia);

 

Advise and teach

  • provide advice on foot care;

  • advise a shoe adapted to the person;

  • ensuring surveillance and continuity of care in patients at risk.
